Teaching Recap: October 2023

October was―in ways globally, nationally, locally, domestically―a nightmare. I am in overwhelm, and don’t have the heart to write my little recap this month. I’ll just share my usual stats, schedule updates, and some of your beautiful and bolstering comments. I hope you’re finding moments of rest and release from what is grieving you.

The Deets

October by the numbers:

  • 60 classes
  • 65.25 hours of teaching time
  • 642 students in attendance (huge jump; up 40% from the previous month)
  • 8 locations/platforms
  • 5 new babies welcomed!

Schedule Updates

Special Event: Please join me for Yoga in the Greenhouse at Allandale Farm! I’ll be leading a 75-minute class in the dreamy, warmly lit greenhouse at this lovely Brookline farm. Many of you know my love for locally grown produce runs deep, and I feel so honored to teach for this community. Class will be held on Tuesday, November 14 at 5:30p. The greenhouse is heated, but you are invited to bring a couple comfortable layers and a blanket (as well as your yoga mat) because the floors are concrete.

Allendale Farm in the gloaming. The greenhouse is lit from within and silhouette against the sky, which is framed by leafy branches.

New Weekly Class: On Thursdays, starting December 7, you can join me regularly at Asana Charlestown. I’ll be leading the midday class in this bright yoga space adjacent to the City Square Park. Join in studio or connect via the virtual stream.

Upcoming Series: Monthly Posture Lab at Soma Yoga Center. Every second Saturday of the month from January through May (maybe beyond?), join me for a two-hour workshop-style exploration into some of yoga’s foundational shapes. All levels of practitioners are invited to attend. We’ll look at the structure and mechanics of a specific asana and learn what muscles and joints are required to create and stabilize the shape in your own body. I’ll help you explore active and passive actions, and guide you through variations of the posture in seated, standing, lying, or inverted options. This is an open-format workshop and yogis are encouraged to ask questions throughout. Supportive language and supportive touch will be offered. Full details and registration forthcoming―I’m super excited about this!

Your Words

A selection of sweet comments and funny feedback from students and peers, received or overheard.

  • I’m always impressed by how you can zero in on a tiny detail that completely changes the pose for the better.
  • Man, you still get nervous in class? You were so smooth though, like a graceful antelope just sweeping around the room, sharing so much knowledge.
  • You always know just what to do! I feel so much better.
  • I can already tell that my afternoon and rest of my work today is going to be better because I’m doing yoga right now.
  • I don’t know about you, but yoga really turned the whole day around for me―as it always does.
  • This is my favorite way to kick off the weekend!
  • Wow. I feel so many times better than when we started.
  • My shoulders thank you for class, and I thank you for such a beautifully led meditation.
  • I came to class wanting to just be a student, and that was possible. It was such a nice class, and I’m so glad that you’re here.
  • I love your classes so much. At the end of them, I always feel strong. And that’s a nice feeling.
  • I was lying in savasana and trying to think of one word to describe Jill’s teaching. And the word I came up with was polished.
  • I love/hate how popular you are because I support you, but I also don’t want to share you.
